Let’s keep Scotland safe for the people we love
MSP Liam McArthur (Scottish Liberal Democrat, Orkney) has lodged proposals for an Assisted Dying Scotland Members Bill. On 13th May, MSPs voted 70 to 56 in favour of the Bill. The bill will now progress to Stage 2 when MSPs can make amendments. A final debate and vote on the amended bill will then take place at Stage 3 at a future date.
No one wants people to suffer at the end of life.
But the reality of assisted suicide is very different from the image depicted by its supporters.
In countries that have legalised so-called assisted dying, safeguards are swiftly eroded, and the most vulnerable are put at risk. In recent months, reports have emerged of marginalised Canadians seeking an ‘assisted death’ due to poverty, disability and homelessness.
With living costs soaring, Scotland cannot afford a regime that leads people to choose death out of fear of poverty or homelessness.
What can I do?
Lobby your MSP in person
While writing is very valuable, the most effective form of lobbying is to go and see your MSPs in person. We have produced a guide to lobbying your MSPs in person specifically on this issue.
Please use this and the briefing on the Bill to go and lobby your MSP in person.

1
Enter your postcode in the box above
Once you have entered your postcode, the tool will bring up your local MSPs and the form will automatically be filled with their contact details.
2
Write your message to your MSPs
You can now enter your message to your MSPs in the ‘Message’ box below. We are providing a template to help you, but it is very important that you edit it and put it in your own words. Politicians appreciate genuine, heartfelt messages over copied-and-pasted content, and soon recognise if they are receiving identical communications from multiple constituents.
Our Briefing on the Bill will help you with your message.
Explain in your own words why you do not want assisted suicide to be legalised. Please include any personal stories you have, or mention why you or a family member would be under threat if the Assisted Dying Scotland Bill was passed. If you are not sure what to write, please read our guides for assistance.

Send E-mail
Once you have written your e-mail message and are ready to send it to your MSPs, simply click to select how you would like to send it. You have two options: option 1 allows you to send the e-mail directly from your own e-mail address and option 2 allows SPUC to send the e-mail on your behalf. MSPs prefer to received personal e-mail from their constituents so we encourage you to select the first option. This will open up your e-mail and all the information (including your message) will be automatically added to your e-mail, ready for you to press send.
