Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada since 2015, has announced that he will resign his position in October, and the leadership of the Liberal Party. SPUC has slammed his “disastrous” pro-abortion premiership.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide, competitive process”, Trudeau announced yesterday.

During his time as prime minster, Trudeau was vociferously pro-abortion, advocating various anti-life measures in Canada and internationally.

Trudeau threatened to deny pro-life pregnancy centres their charitable status. “Some crisis pregnancy centres are dishonest. They don’t provide abortions — and they purposely don’t tell you that”, he posted on X in October 2024.

“If these centres want their charitable status, they need to be transparent about the choices they offer — and the ones they don’t.”

He also withheld health funding from New Brunswick after the Canadian province refused to fund abortion services, and he threatened to hold back “millions of dollars in health transfers”.

The Prime Minister also used COVID-19 funding for underdeveloped countries to fund abortion under the banner of “reproductive rights”.

In 2018, Trudeau appeared to threaten the free speech and the right to religious freedom of pro-life individuals and groups in Canada, stating:

“Of course, you’re more than allowed to have whatever beliefs you like, but when those beliefs lead to actions determined to restrict a woman’s right to control her own bodies, that’s where I, and I think we, draw the line as a country.”

It was also Trudeau’s government that legalised assisted suicide in Canada in 2016, which led to a rapid rise in such deaths every year. In 2023, there were over 15,000 state-sanctioned assisted suicides in Canada, with many deaths appearing to take place beyond the limits of the law.

A pro-abortion figurehead

Daniel Frampton, SPUC Editorial Officer, said: “Justin Trudeau leaves behind a ghastly legacy of death in Canada, which is a tragedy for all Canadians. For many people, not least the unborn lost to abortion, his resignation comes too late.

“For a decade, Trudeau has been the figurehead of a pro-abortion international elite that has sought to expand the abortion empire at every opportunity, at home and abroad, always with a smile on his face as he threatened pro-life men and women seeking to protect innocent lives.

“While his resignation is to be welcomed, it’s up to Canadians to decide what future they want for themselves and their children. As we look back on Trudeau’s disastrous premiership, now is the time to reject not only Trudeau but also the disingenuous, life-denying regime that he always represented.”
