The woman who was filmed assaulting a pro-life journalist on the streets of New York has been charged with second-degree assault. Her GoFundMe attempt to raise money for legal fees has also been removed.
Savannah Craven Antao, 23, was hit twice by Brianna Rivers during an interview on 3 April about Planned Parenthood and abortion. The attack was caught on film by the victim’s husband, and Mrs Antao was later pictured with a bloodied face, and she required stitches.
Rivers later posted on Facebook to apologise, though she also appeared to blame Mrs Antao, calling her “a professional antagonist, not a ‘reporter’”.
But Rivers has since been arrested and charged with one count of second-degree assault. If found guilty, she could face a prison sentence of up to seven years.
While Rivers launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise £25000 towards lawyer costs, the site removed it for breaching its terms of service that forbids the raising of legal funds for cases of alleged violent crimes.
The accused also says she lost her job.
After the attack, Mrs Antao spoke to Fox News. “Many abortion supporters, they don’t like a differing opinion – they don’t like their opinion to be challenged”, she said.
“The truth is, abortion is violence, and it creates violence”, she continued. “And this is what abortion does to people. It hurts women, it hurts families and it hurts babies.”
Attacks against pro-life individuals and groups have increased significantly since the reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
A pro-abortion Californian man recently pleaded guilty to attempting to kill US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, one of the five justices who voted to overturn the federal right to abortion established in 1973.
“Gonna stop roe v wade from being overturned”, said Nicholas John Roske, 29, who was later apprehended on 8 June 2022 near the Maryland home of Justice Kavanaugh.
A US Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) study reported that pro-abortion attacks increased by 22x after the Court decision was leaked, and there were 135 attacks on pro-life individuals and groups compared with just six against pro-abortion advocates between 3 May and 24 September 2022.
Violence and threats directed at pro-life students in the UK is also common.
On 28 March 2025, students of the pro-life society at the University of Manchester were given a police escort for their safety after pro-abortion protestors blockaded an event on campus.
A similar Manchester University event saw pro-life female students subjected to rape threats, and one woman was followed home.
