On the eve of the US midterm elections, Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers has sparked outrage among pro-life supporters after appearing to abandon his longstanding opposition to abortion in a last-minute attempt to win over voters in Michigan.
Rogers, who previously maintained a 100 per cent pro-life voting record during his time in Congress, released a campaign advert promising not to challenge Michigan’s existing abortion laws if elected to the Senate.
“I know that a decision about a pregnancy is one of the most difficult and personal decisions a woman will make”, Rogers said. “Michigan voters have already decided the issue and I respect that decision. In the Senate, I won’t do anything to change it.”
The intervention followed accusations from his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, that Rogers supported a nationwide abortion ban. Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment protecting abortion access in 2022, following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Although Rogers has continued to describe himself as pro-life, his latest remarks represent a striking departure from the position which earned him the support of anti-abortion campaigners throughout his political career.
With the election approaching, the advert appears calculated to reassure abortion-supporting voters. However, critics have accused Rogers of sacrificing his principles, and the lives of unborn children, on the altar of his own political ambitions.
The decision has already cost him the endorsement of CatholicVote, an influential American Catholic advocacy organisation, which announced that it was suspending its support for the Republican candidate.
In a statement expressing disappointment, CatholicVote said Rogers had effectively abandoned the position on which many supporters had campaigned for him.
“Many of you gave, knocked on doors, and prayed for his campaign because you trusted that he would stand for the unborn, as he did for years in Congress. I trusted that too”, a spokesman for the organisation said.
CatholicVote stressed that abortion remained a non-negotiable issue, adding that while El-Sayed represented a considerably more pro-abortion alternative, it could no longer endorse Rogers.
The spinelessness of Rogers’ decision has not escaped pro-life commentators.
Rogers’ reversal also raises wider questions about the Republican Party’s commitment to protecting unborn children following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
While the Supreme Court decision allowed individual states to introduce stronger abortion restrictions, it did not prevent federal lawmakers from pursuing further protections. The Trump administration has been inactive in banning the abortion pill and banning late term abortion, leaving many children in certain US states in more danger than they were pre-2022.
SPUC’s Executive Director Michael Robinson says: “Mike Rogers distancing himself from his pro-life record at the eleventh hour has left many supporters questioning whether political success has become more important than the principles he once claimed to uphold. To make such a blunt video disregarding the rights of babies means that answer is probably ‘yes.’ In Britain we looked over the Atlantic with great hope in 2022 and have yet again been let down by weak politicians. The entire West needs to see the reintroduction of principled politicians who are willing to defend the vulnerable. SPUC hopes to see that happen elsewhere across the United States.”
