VICTORY: Bill defeated!

MSP Liam McArthur (Scottish Liberal Democrat, Orkney) lodged proposals for an Assisted Dying Scotland Members Bill. On 13th May 2025, MSPs voted 70 to 56 in favour of the Bill. In November 2025, the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee examined the Bill at Stage 2 across four meetings. Only minimal changes were made.

In the final vote on Tuesday 17th March 2026, MSPs voted by 69 votes to 57 to reject the Bill.

The Bill was defeated following a final three-hour debate in Holyrood, with three MSPs publicly changing their vote from the previous stage.
