On Wednesday 18 March, peers in the House of Lords voted to expand the UK’s already extreme abortion laws by completely decriminalising abortion up to birth for the mother.

This sweeping change was pushed through without pre‑legislative scrutiny, public consultation, or a detailed impact assessment. Supporters of the proposal have therefore acted on ideology rather than evidence, advancing changes without a proper understanding of their serious consequences.

This came after a vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday 17 June, where MPs backed further expansions to our abortion laws. Abortion advocates in Parliament hijacked the Government’s Crime and Policing Bill by tabling amendments to remove abortion from the criminal law altogether. You can see how your MP voted here.

New Clause 1

New Clause 1, tabled by Tonia Antoniazzi MP, seeks to change criminal law so that “no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy” at any gestation. This means that a woman who induced her abortion at home using pills (or any other method) at any stage of pregnancy, including just before natural birth, would not commit a crime.

This was approved by 379 votes to 137.

What next?

The Crime and Policing Bill is now before the House of Lords.

The Lords debated the Bill at Second Reading on 16^th October 2025, with peers who spoke on the decriminalisation clause (191) opposing the policy by almost three to one.

On 2 February 2026, Lords debated the clause and associated amendments at Committee Stage. While there were no votes at this point, again a majority of peers spoke against including Clause 191 in the Bill, or in favour of amending it.

Report Stage of the Bill commences on Wednesday 25^th February. The debate on abortion (now Clause 208 of the Bill) will take place on Wednesday 18 March. Any votes will happen then.

Please write to members of the House of Lords and ask them to fight the extreme abortion up to birth amendment. This was not in any manifesto. It was passed after just 43 minutes backbench debate, with very little notice. The public did not know this was coming – and are outraged that MPs have voted through this barbaric policy. The Lords can and must fight back.
