On Tuesday 17th June, MPs voted to expand our already horrific abortion laws even further. Abortion advocates in Parliament hijacked the Government’s Crime and Policing Bill by tabling amendments to remove abortion from the criminal law. You can see how your MP voted here.
New Clause 1
New Clause 1, tabled by Tonia Antoniazzi MP, seeks to change criminal law so that “no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy” at any gestation. This means that a woman who induced her abortion at home using pills (or any other method) at any stage of pregnancy, including just before natural birth, would not commit a crime.
This was approved by 379 votes to 137.
New Clause 20
New Clause 20, tabled by Stella Creasy, and which would have completely repealed the underlying abortion law, leaving no way to prosecute an abusive partner who causes the death of an unborn baby, was not voted on.
What next?
The Crime and Policing Bill has now passed to the House of Lords for debate and scrutiny. As NC1 was incorporated into the Bill, the clause on decriminalising abortion is now Clause 191 of the Crime and Policing Bill. There will be opportunities for Peers to debate Clause 191 and to suggest changes to it – or even to reject it altogether.
Please write to members of the House of Lords and ask them to fight the extreme abortion up to birth amendment. This was not in any manifesto. It was passed after just 43 minutes backbench debate, with very little notice. The public did not know this was coming – and are outraged that MPs have voted through this barbaric policy. The Lords can and must fight back.
Please use our tool to contact members of the House of Lords. It will generate a Peer at random for you to write to, and bring up an editable template. Once you have finished your letter, it will be emailed to you to print off and send to the Peer by post. Alternatively, you can opt to send your message by email, though paper letters are always more impactful than emails.
You can contact as many Peers as you like (but send the letters in separate envelopes).

Follow these steps to write your letter:
- The tool has brought up a peer for you to write to.
- Customise your letter in the editor and press Send. The letter will be emailed to you.
- Check your email and print your letter out.
- Address the envelope [Name of Peer], House of Lords, London SW1A 0PW
- Stick on a stamp, and put it in the post!
