Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, Spain, has died by euthanasia, following a protracted court battle. News of the case broke on the morning of Thursday 26th March, as it was featured on Spanish TV programme, Y Ahora Sonsoles, and the story went viral on X.
The tragic details of Ramos’ life are why the story has attracted the attention of the world’s media. Ramos was reportedly raped on two occasions, once by her ex-boyfriend and then in 2022 by multiple men in a state-run facility for vulnerable young people. In October 2022, Ramos then attempted suicide, jumping from a fifth-floor window of an apartment building. She survived the attempt but was rendered a paraplegic.
Ramos then sought to end her life by euthanasia, but a long legal battle ensued, with her father, Geronimo Castillo, fighting her decision. The case went as high as the European Court of Human Rights, with her father being represented by Abogados Cristianos, or Christian Lawyers. The Court ruled in favour of Noelia, and her death by euthanasia was scheduled for Thursday 26th March at 6pm. Ramos’ death was confirmed by multiple news sources on Thursday evening.
Global outcry
The tragic case garnered attention from Spain and beyond, with many accusing the Spanish State of simply giving up on Noelia. Isabel Pérez Moñino, spokesperson for Spanish conservative political party, Vox, “denounced” the State as having “turned its back on a victim”:
Commenting on the case on X, actress and anti-assisted suicide campaigner, Liz Carr, noted that, “Once it’s legalised, state approved, medically assisted suicide/euthanasia becomes increasingly socially acceptable.”
Lila Rose, President of US pro-life group, Live Action, shared the following on X, where she accused the Spanish State of Ramos’ murder:
SPUC Comment
Commenting on this tragic case, SPUC’s CEO, John Deighan, said: “This case is heartbreaking for all involved. It is heartbreaking for Noelia, her parents and her friends. There are even reports of some of Noelia’s friends trying to change her mind at the eleventh hour. The Spanish State failed Noelia at every turn, not least when, instead of doing their utmost to give her the help she needed to fight her depression, they offered her death instead.”
Mr Deighan continued: “This truly awful story underscores why we dodged a bullet when Liam McArthur’s assisted suicide bill was voted against recently at Holyrood. Be under no illusions, had McArthur’s bill passed, we would have been only a matter of years away from similar stories playing out in Scotland. Whilst we do not yet have confirmation, we should also take hope in the fact that Kim Leadbeater’s equally reprehensible suicide bill is now likely to fall.”
